Sua fase inicial, entre fins dos anos 1960 e meados dos anos de 1980, contou com a participação efetiva de professores como Maria de Lourdes Moraes e Vinícius Lima, entre outros. Nessa etapa, o número de anos era bem inferior à habilitação de Jornalismo, a mais procurada pelos alunos naquela época. Hoje é a segunda habilitação em número de alunos. A partir da reforma curricular dos anos 1980, a habilitação passou por uma reformulação, com o aumento das disciplinas específicas e a contração de novos professores em áreas, como criação, direção de arte, planejamento, mídia, além das disciplinas voltadas para a formação dos comunicadores.
